Lieutenant Jim Michel began his career with the Montclair Police Department in 1997, when he was hired as a police officer. Prior to joining law enforcement, Lt. Michel served in the United States Army for three years in a Light Infantry Air Assault Unit. He deployed to Japan on two occasions, and also to Haiti during 1995 where he served as part of “Operation Uphold Democracy”.

Lt. Michel’s training and assignments as a police officer have included uniformed patrol, Field Training Officer, Drug Recognition Expert, a member of the Problem Oriented Policing Team (POP), Narcotics Investigator, and detective where he worked fraud, property crimes, and crimes against persons. Lt. Michel held the rank of sergeant from 2013 to 2018, where he supervised patrol as a Watch Commander and later the Detective Bureau.

Lt. Michel was promoted to Police Lieutenant in 2018, and his responsibilities have included the management of patrol, dispatch, Mobile Field Force, the Field Training Program, the Special Enforcement Team, the Major Accident Investigation Team, volunteers, the Police Explorer Program, recruitment, and community relations. Lieutenant Michel possesses a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Management and Supervision, which he earned in 2010.
