Entry Level Police Officer
Entry level police officers are men and women who are new to the law enforcement career field. They have completed a California police or sheriff’s academy (also known as a POST Basic Academy) or are currently enrolled in one, and are ready to become employed as a law enforcement officer.
Requirements
- Enrolled in or have graduated from a California POST-certified basic academy.
- Submit a City of Montclair job application.
- Successfully pass a background investigation.
- Successfully pass a medical examination.
- Successfully pass an oral interview.
- Successfully pass a physical agility test.
- Successfully pass a polygraph examination.
- Susccessfully pass a psychological examination.
- Complete a California POST PELLETB or Successfully pass a written NTN examination

Retirement/Insurance
- Fulltime employees are currently covered by the Public Employees’ Retirement System.

Vacation
- 80 hours of vacation after one year of service.

Sick Leave
- Eight hours per month. The City may credit an employee who is coming from another governmental agency with one half of his/her accumulated sick leave up to a maximum of 240 hours.

Incentives
The City of Montclair provides special pay incentives for eligible officers:
- Military Veterans and college graduates may be entitled to up to $8,500 in additional hiring incentives.
Base Salary Increases
- 4% of base pay effective July 1, 2024
Special Assignment Pay
- Detective/ Narcotics: 4% of base pay
- Field Training Officer: 2.5% of base pay
- Motorcycle Officer: 2% of base pay
- Special Enforcement: 2% of base pay
Special Pay
- Intermdiate POST Certificate: $100 monthly.
- Advanced POST Certificate: $175 monthly.
- Longevity Pay: 2.5% of base pay every five-years.
- Education Grant Program: $1,300 per fiscal year.
- Bilingual Pay: $75 monthly.
- Uniform Allowance: $45 monthly.
Lateral Police Officer
Lateral police officers are men and women who are experienced law enforcement officers that possess a California Basic POST Certificate. They are usually employed at a law enforcement agency and are looking for a new direction in their career.
Requirements
- Possess a California Basic POST Certificate.
- Submit a City of Montclair job application.
- Successfully pass a background investigation.
- Successfully pass a medical examination.
- Successfully pass an oral interview.
- Successfully pass a physical agility test.
- Successfully pass a polygraph examination.
- Susccessfully pass a psychological examination.
Salary
Lateral police officers earn between $85,824- $104,328

Reserve Police Officers
Level I and II
Reserve police officers are men and women who are employed in non-law enforcement careers, but wish to give back to their community by serving as police officers on a part-time basis.
Requirements
- Submit a City of Montclair application
- Level II – Completion of Level II Reserve Officer Training.
- Level I – Completion of Level I Reserve Officer, Basic Police Academy, or currently enrolled in a Basic Police Academy (must have completed the academy prior to appointment to the position).
- Successfully pass a background investigation.
- Successfully pass a medical examination.
- Successfully pass an oral interview.
- Successfully pass a physical agility test.
- Successfully pass a polygraph examination.
- Susccessfully pass a psychological examination.
- Successfully pass a written examination.
Salary
Reserve police officers earn $300 a month. They are considered part-time employees with no benefits.
